Saturday started off as a lazy morning...we then decided to get ready for the day and visit the The State Hermitage Museum. Before it was a museum, in the 1760's onward, it was known as the Winter Palace and served as the main residence of the Russian Tsars. It is now one of the world's largest and oldest art and culture museums. We were able to see works of art by Rembrandt, Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet and Renoir. We also saw sculptures dating back to the 4th and 5th century BC....Someone told us that if we were to spend 1 minute looking at every item (both on display and in storage) for 24/7, it would take over 11 years to see everything! We were only there a few hours and felt like we saw so much...it was a truly magnificent place! When we left the Hermitage, we took a stroll along the Neva River. It was lovely to see the water flowing instead of frozen (with people walking across it) as it was during our trip in February. We took our time walking back to the apartment and admired an "art fair" that takes places in a square along our street.
Sunday has been a day of rest and relaxation. We look forward to our morning visit tomorrow. Hopefully he is feeling better!
